NFT System

NFT (nutrient film technique) systems involve elements of other systems in a novel approach.

Nutrient is pumped from a reservoir to elongated chambers called gullies. Plants in net pots are inserted into holes in the covered tops of the gullies.

The nutrient flows past the plants as a shallow film along the bottom of the angled gully to a drain, where it is returned to the reservoir.

Plant roots extend down from the net pots to the nutrient film. Roots above the film are able to absorb additional oxygen.

NFT might not be the best method for a hydroponics beginner. Issues include:

• power failures
• roots clogging gullies and drains
• uneven distribution of nutrients
• nutrient solution too hot or cold
• spreading of diseases
